November 2009
Dear Parishioner,
Many graces have come to me since I became the Pastor of St. Colette Parish, and for this I am very grateful. Not a day goes by without expressing gratitude to God in prayer for you, the wonderful parishioners of this great community of faith. Everything you bring is a gift: not only the joys that brighten my day, but also those challenges that help me to grow and become a better listener. The many committees in the parish demonstrate an abundant involvement of so many people and the selfless giving of time and talent. And your monetary contributions show your commitment and care for the parish with its many pastoral, sacramental and educational responsibilities.
As you well know from your own personal and household budgeting & expenses, the past year has had its challenges. It is no different for the parish. The weekly report of collections as listed in the weekend’s bulletin indicates that we are experiencing a significant deficit. We have barely been able to meet the operating needs of the Parish without having to go into long-term major debt. This is now challenged by urgent needs as described below.
1. PARISH HOUSE HEATING & COOLING SYSTEM
The combined heating and cooling system in the Parish House had a breakdown that required immediate repair in this chilly fall weather. The total cost of the repair is $29,000. which is being paid for by a loan from the Archdiocese and must be paid back.
2. FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM
A City of Rolling Meadows ordinance is now requiring the installation of a fire detection system in the church. Failure to comply will result in fines and loss of use of the church building until a system is installed. An estimate of cost for the system is $41,000. The Archdiocese will extend a loan for the work, but insists that we provide a plan for repayment before the loan is granted.
3. PARKING LOT REPAIRS
The Parish parking lot needs significant work and must be repaired before the winter freeze. There are potholes that can be a danger to people who have difficulty walking, will hinder snow removal work, and will form slippery ice pockets in the winter. Cost of the repairs is estimated to be $24,000.
After much discussion, the Finance Council and I have concluded that a capital pledge appeal is needed to meet the above stated financial needs of the Parish. The total amount is $94,000.
It is with deep sorrow and concern that I must approach you at this time for additional funds above and beyond your normal contributions. But I also remind you that this is your parish, your community, and we all have a shared responsibility to care for and strengthen this place that we call home.
I know that you can do this because you are very generous people. But beyond generosity, it is about belief. St. Colette Parish has made a significant impact on the Rolling Meadows community for over fifty years. It promises to be an anchor of faith and the voice that calls out to others and invited believers to “come and see the goodness of the Lord.” It will form and shape future generations while it nourishes and strengthens us now as we grow in our identity as disciples of Christ.
Enclosed you will find a pledge card that indicates options for your sacrificial commitment. Note that this response from you is for the immediate and essential facility repairs and upgrades and is in addition to your regular Parish offering. Please place this pledge card in the regular Sunday collection at Mass or mail it to the Parish House by December 20, 2009. We will make available monthly envelopes beginning January 2010.
I hope that after prayer and reflection you will give out of thanksgiving. Part with your funds precisely because God has been so wonderfully generous to you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Dennis Zalecki, Pastor
